Theri’s music will be highly appealing to the young crowd.
So after a lot anticipation and excitement, the audio tracks of Ilayathalapathy’s Theri is finally out. One of the best parts about Theri’s teaser was its background score and so the expectations for this album is shooting over the roof. So let us take a look at how good it is...
This first song is a power packed and energetic Kuthu number that is sung by none other than Thenisai Thedral Deva, who is a master when it comes to Kuthu songs. The song is a tribute to police officers all across the country and is at the same time a comic, satirical take society’s vices like corruption, eve teasing and negligence of safety. The background by GV Prakash is really stellar, with good use of drums, electric guitars, turntables and folk instruments used in Kuthu songs. Overall, this song will be the perfect opening song for Ilayathalapathy in the actual movie.
After a pumped up opening track, the very next song is a very soft, romantic song that will fill you with love and tenderness. Titled as En Jeevan, it is a perfect song for soul mates. Hariharan is back to woo all of us with his melodic croon. Equally mesmerising is the sweet, mellifluous voice of Saindhavi. Both the singers are well supported by Vaikom Vijayalakshmi who sings a few beautiful Sanskrit lines in between which truly deepens the meaning of the song. As for the music, hats off to Mr Prakash who makes it a very touching song with a liberal use of violins, pianos and soft music.
Eena Meena Teeka
Here is an adorable and fun filled number which is all about father daughter bonding in a way. It is called Eena Meena Teeka, after an old Hindi song, and sure enough, you will find a bit of charm of the old times in this track, which is fused with modern beats. Other than the fun beats, the cute voice of Uthara Unnikrishnan will hold all your attention as she complains about how incompetent her dad is. GV Prakash himself sings as the dad as he tries to console his daughter and say that he will do better. Overall, Eena Meena Teeka is a pretty good and upbeat song.
This song is actually a very quirky number. It begins with an animated, shrill voice, followed by Scottish bagpipes. Music director Prakash sure knows how to mix different genres of music together to create something very different and fantastic. But the biggest highlight is that, Ilayathalapathy himself has sung this track! He is supported by Neeti Mohan. Chella Kutti is a naughty and playful duet which is also a little childish with the quirky and catchy lyrics. It looks like Theri is all about fun and energy.
Here is the T.Rajendar song we have all been waiting for. The other songs have plenty of energy, but this one takes it to another level. This is the duet song to dance to. And the lyrics are really naughty and filled with double entendres that will make you laugh. The Kottu is the highlight throughout the song, to which you can’t help but tap your feet. A good song on its own, but when combined with Chella Kutty and the other songs in the album, it does seem a little repetitive.
Theri, which is a cocktail of energetic songs, has only two slow song. One is En Jeevan and the other is this one. Thaimai as it is called means motherhood and this song is a touching tribute to mothers all around. Prakash has very skilfully used classical instruments for this song like flutes and tabla. The score combined with Bombay Jayashri’s inimitable vocals gives the song a very Carnatic feel to it. A nice and refreshing song in an album filled with similar songs.
Dub Theri Step
The album closes with a bang with this musical medley. It is an amazing fusion of EDM along with an aggressive rap by Arunraja Kamaraj. Indeed, if this is the theme music for the movie, then get ready to feel some serious goosebumps when you finally catch the action thriller in theatres.
Each song is fantastic in its own right. But as an album it is very consistent, which at the same time gives some much needed variation at the right time to keep things interesting. In the end, it is a good album but not a masterpiece.
Jithu Jilladi and En Jeevan.
