After much anticipation and legal drama, Kamal Haasan’s film Thug Life was released in theaters on Thursday. Thug Life is a collaborative project of legendary filmmaker Mani Ratnam and legendary actor Kamal Haasan, and it boasts a cast including Trisha Krishnan, Silambarasan TR, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Abhirami, Ashok Selvan, Joju George, Nassar, Ali Fazal, and Mahesh Manjrekar.
According to reports, the movie Thug Life seems to be having an opening day that was neither expected nor deserved, casting a shadow over the ambitious reunion of the two cinematic giants. Some reports even suggest that Thug Life has only collected around Rs 11.67 crore at the domestic box office, a number significantly lower than the first-day earnings of Haasan’s recent film Indian 2, which collected Rs 25.6 crore on its opening day, despite being considered a box office underperformer itself. Apart from all this monetary jargon, the movie had an overall 48.72% Tamil Occupancy on Thursday and an overall 5.73% Hindi Occupancy for the 2D version. Thug Life had an overall 32.86% Tamil occupancy for the IMAX 2D version, an overall 21.92% Telugu Occupancy, and an overall 7.17% Hindi Occupancy.
Doesn’t appeal to the viewers
The audience members have also not been very positive about the movie for its slow and predictable writing, calling it “the shock of the year” and “biggest scam of the year”, some have even suggested that Kamal Haasan’s previous film Indian 2 was a much better film than whatever Thug Life is.
Kamal Haasan to face huge loss
According to a report from The Hindu, Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam film might see a hefty loss as the film's release deals with the aftermath of Kamal Haasan's controversial Tamil-Kannada remark, due to which the release of the film is in limbo in Karnataka. Film Producer and Distributor G. Dhananjayan recently shared with the media that the Kamal Haasan starrer film will be missing out on about Rs 35 to Rs 40 crore gross at the box office and Rs 12 to Rs 15 crore in share to producers' share due to the blockage of the film in Karnataka by the local film body an Karnataka High Court.
