Titli movie review: This Ranvir Shorey - Shashank Arora masterpiece is not for the faint-hearted!

Titli directed by Kanu Behl and backed by Yash Raj Films is easily one of the best films in recent times, here's why...

Sharp performances, crisp editing and brilliant story telling make up for a great, nay awesome film and Titli has all these elements and more. Movie goers are sure in for a treat. If you are a fan of bubblegum romance, then please stay away from this flick for it will force you to ask rather uncomfortable questions about life.

What's it about:

Well, the premise of the film dwells on the lives of three brothers living in a dark underbelly of Delhi. Their family business includes selling miscellaneous objects and breaking into cars and hammering hapless victims before running away with the loot. This subject is enough to hook you on. The film's protagonist is Titli, Shashank Arora and the movie largely dwells on his struggle of flying away from his worthless existence. Ranvir is perfect in every scene as a violent, compulsive, primitive family man desperately trying to make the ends meet. Bawla played by Amit Sial is extremely believable as a man with slight gay leanings, stuck in a poverty ridden life. So, the family gets Titli married ( forcefully) to Neelu (Shivani Raghuvanshi) from a 'respectful' family in a hope that she will help salvage financial crises the family is into. Titli has other dreams and marriage doesn't feature anywhere in them. He is desperate to fly away. Neelu on other hand is head over heels in love with Prince ( we grudgingly acknowledge the symbolism here) and is ready to do anything to break free from the shackles of her marriage, which is more of an arrangement, to be with her Prince Charming. Titli shrewdly uses this situation to his convenience and strikes a deal with his bonny wife. The film is a journey of their individual dreams juxtaposed with their family's skewed expectations from them.

What's Hot?

Everything, starting from the story telling, performances, background sounds to capturing small nuances highlighting the interpersonal relationships of the protagonists is perfect. The scene where Titli tries of make an honest woman out of his wife Neelu on their first night as a married couple is nothing short of amazing. He approaches. She retaliates. There is fervour and angst and clinking of bangles. The nature of their troubled, unfulfilled relationship is established. In another scene, Titli convinces his wife to break her arm. It is both bizarre and amusing that he injects anesthesia to numb her senses. Titli impatiently hits her repeatedly to ask if the effect of anesthesia has started working. While she moans resignedly, thoda wait to karlo! You cringe at the sight of Ranvir Shorey turning into a primitive, violent person in a jiffy the moment things don't go as per his will.

In any film, powerful scenes are the ones marked by performance sans heavy background score or brouhaha. In this film, characters deliver intense scenes so easily and matter-of-factly that one is mesmerised and hooked on to the frame. Best part about Titli is that the makers don't dumb down or spoon feed things to their viewers. The film is filled with such brilliant sequences. Father played by Lalit Behl delivers a power packed performance only with his quaint mannerisms and occasional one liners. Watching this film will definitely broaden your horizons

What's Not?

One can hardly pinpoint anything which is not appealing in Titli. There is nothing really that is anything short of perfect.

What to do?

Go watch this film now! But again we must warn you that it is not for the faint hearted. You will get some food for thought after watching it, we guarantee. Prepare to battle with some uncomfortable questions about your existence later.
