Deepti Naval and Zarina Wahab steal the show in the first episode!
Meri Awaaz Hi Pehchaan Hai is a story of a rivalry between two accomplished singing legends. It has an uncanny resemblance to the famed competition between Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle in their heydays. The show starts off with everyone talking about how the sisters can’t see eye to eye at a felicitation ceremony. Thereafter, it goes into flashback mode courtesy Pallavi Joshi, who plays the mother of the sisters, Kalyani and Ketaki. The actress is not very convincing as an old woman but gets back into form in the younger version. Performance-wise, it is Deepti Naval (Kalyani) and Zarina Wahab (Ketaki) who shine brightly. Both of them have superb presence and rule the screen.
The story talks about their father, Rajaram, who runs a music and dance academy in a rural town, Nagothane. He is purist whose only love is classical music. However, his business is zilch and he is heavily into debt. The relationship between the father and the kids is shown well. A mention must be made of Jannat Zubair Rehmani who plays the young Kalyani. She has a lot of poise for someone so young. Mehnaz Charm, the young Ketaki is also lively. The story-telling could be better as there is no build up to the narration. However, this is the first episode and we need to give it some time. Veteran actress Savita Prabhune also makes an appearance.
The locations are authentic and the sets look very real. Set in rural Maharashtra, it stays true to the milieu. It is a slow start for Meri Awaaz Hi Pehchaan Hai but that’s more because of the era it is set in.
