The workers have gone on an indefinite strike for a wage hike...
Bollywood is in a bit of a pickle currently. Reports of 500 vanity van workers and cleaners going on an indefinite strike has hit the headlines. The workers are demanding a hike in their wages and they say that the strike won't end till their demands are met.
The strike has been started by Shiv Sena-promoted film workers' union, Chitrapat Sena. Akshay Bardapurkar, who is the general secretary of the Sena, was quoted by a leading daily saying, "We had a meeting with all the producer associations in November last year and they had asked for a month's time to look into our demand. But now that they've not replied to notices repeatedly sent by us, we have decided to cease work."
The demands made by the workers seem justified considering how meagre their current wages are. A vanity van driver earns Rs 700 per shift while a cleaner earns Rs. 300 to keep the vans spic and span. But now they are demanding the wages to be increased to Rs 1000 and Rs 500 respectively. Bollywood celebs are minting money project after project and they sure can spare a lot more than what they pay their vanity van helpers currently.
Another member of the union, Kishan Deshmukh says "The last time, our wage was increased by just Rs 100. It is tough to survive on such meagre salaries."
One hopes that their pleas will be heard and work will resume soon.
