Ram Gopal Varma had earlier made Kannada film Killing Veerappan
Veerappan is the story of one of the most dreaded dacoits in India. It is also the story of how the police task force was able to catch up with him after years of him eluding and killing their members. Our critic Sreeju Sudhakaran is watching the film at a theater right now and has sent us his first impression of Ram Gopal Varma's Veerappan.
Sreeju says, "The movie begins with the dreaded dacoit attacking a police guard post and killing the main officer there. The task force retaliates by attacking Veerappan's hideout and capturing his wife. To lure him out of the jungle, they release the wife and lets her stay in the house of the slain officer, whose wife is asked to win her trust and get important info.
Veerappan is one of the most fascinating chapters in India. Considering how he manage to evade the entire army and police force with just a handful of people with jungle as his cover, he is an enigma. And it is with this enigma, RGV is so obsessed with, and so is the background score. Every time you see the character, there is a rousing background score that's like a cheer for the man. Apart from this unsubtle dacoit worship and a slight docu drama feel, Veerappan had been riveting till now. The actor who plays the dacoit, Sandeep Bharadwaj, is an example of fine casting. Usha Jadhav who plays Veerappan's wife is also a brilliant actress. The encounter scene just before the interval is fantastically directed. This is definitely return to form for RGV....well almost."
