Actor Vikram Chatterjee, who was previously accused of rash and negligent driving, and was later charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder for the death of city model Sonika Chauhan, has been arrested by Kolkata Police last night.
The actor was arrested for the culpable homicide considering the continuous changes in the speed of his Toyota Corolla Altis car before the accident.
"The report, which was received by police last week, revealed that about 4.6 seconds before the crash, the car was moving at 105 km/hr. About 2.1 seconds before the crash, the speed was reduced to 93 km/hr, and till 1.6 seconds before the crash, no break was applied. This proves the driver was not in control. The reports have proved that car was at a high speed. This can be considered a deliberate act; hence we moved court and court accepted our prayer. We have booked Vikram under Section 304 of IPC,” a police officer had said. Also read: Vikram Chatterjee charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder for the death of Sonika Chauhan
Police claimed that according to the evidence, Vikram was aware of what he was doing. If proven guilty he'll be given 10 years plus punishment in Jail.
The actor was previously charged with rash driving (Section 279 of the Indian Penal Code) and causing death by negligence (Section 304A) after the accident, police said. During the previous interrogation, he confessed to having consumed alcohol on the night of the accident, but claimed that he was not drunk and the car was not speeding. Chatterjee was on the wheels of his car while his partner Sonika was on the front seat when the accident happened on a south Kolkata street on their way back from a party on April 29.
Sonika was rushed to a city hospital where she succumbed to her injuries. The actor himself sustained head injury in the accident and was hospitalised.
