Bollywood actress Manisha Koirala, who has impressed us with her performances in films like Khamoshi: The Musical, Dil Se, Company, Mann, Saudagar and many others, is celebrating her 50th birthday. The versatile actress, who has time and again proved her acting prowess, was once called a 'terrible actress' by filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra. Yes, we are talking about 1942: A Love Story, which is still popular among the audience for RD Burman's melodies. Manisha Koirala in her book named Healed: How Cancer Gave Me a New Life, wrote about the interesting incident, which reads, “I remember my screen test for 1942: A Love Story. Veteran filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra had called me to do a scene. But to my disappointment, at the end of it he remarked: ‘Manisha, you were sh*t. You’re a terrible actress.’”
But Manisha took it as a challenge and requested Vidhu Vinod Chopra for a day's time and a chance for one more audition. She worked hard and practised her lines and next day, Vidhu Vinod Chopra was left speechless with performance. He then told the actress, “If this is the heart and soul that you promise to put into each scene of my movie, I will sign you up instead of Madhuri Dixit. Manisha, yesterday, you were at zero. You are at a hundred today.”
Interestingly, Anil Kapoor had also rejected the film earlier as he told a news agency, "1942: A Love Story was the only love story I did. I was very uncomfortable. Initially, I refused to do the film. I told them clearly that I wouldn't be able to do such a role." He added, "I even suggested Aamir Khan and Bobby Deol for the role. I asked them, from which angle do I look romantic? I was already a father of three kids at that time. But they convinced me. Today I feel good that I did it. I worked really hard, lost weight, cut my hair, trimmed my mustache, and worked on my costume to create the character. It was one of my most romantic films ever made. It had beautiful songs like 'Ek ladki ko Dekha toh aisa lagaa', 'Kuch na Kaho' and 'Rim jhim', which people remember to date. Now when I see the film, I can't imagine anybody else doing that role."
