Filmmaker and Jury Chairperson Priyadarshan has been in the news for all the wrong reasons lately. People are just not happy that Akshay Kumar won an award for Rustom when there were much deserving actors and films out there. The filmmaker has been getting a lot of flak for his decision and is not really saying the right things to handle the situation. People argued that Aamir Khan for Dangal or Manoj Bajpayee for Aligarh would have been a better option. But the jury chairperson disagreed saying that," Aamir recently said that he wouldn’t personally accept the award if he is given one. If I remember, Aamir didn’t attend the ceremony when he won the award for Taare Zameen Par (The film bagged the National Film Award for Best Film on Family Welfare in 2008). So, why spoil it for some other actor who stood as good a chance of winning the award."
The filmmaker's recent statement to defend his decision is, in our opinion, just making things worse. He told PTI," I have heard of all that and I will answer it in a simple way. When Ramesh Sippy was jury head last year Amitabh Bachchan won. When Prakash Jha was head of the jury, Ajay Devgn won. So no one questioned at that time. So why all these questions are cropping up today." (ALSO READ: Priyadarshan has let down every true movie fan by giving a National Award to Akshay Kumar – here’s why)
He concluded saying," Akshay was given the best actor on the basis of his performance in two films - Airlift and Rustom. It was the jury’s decision. One performance was dramatic and one was realistic. But according to the rule book, only one film can be mentioned and Rustom was mentioned in the list. But the award recognises his performance in both the movies." That's hardly an argument that'll shut people up. Also, it's rather sad that the filmmaker still thinks of it as a fair decision, don't you think? What are your thoughts on this? Post them in the comments below and stay hooked with us for more.
