The Gangs of Wasseypur actor plans to go solo and says he won't do supporting roles from now on
There is no doubt that Nawazuddin Siddiqui is one of the finest and most exciting finds of the decade as far as actors are concerned. The 38-year-old thoroughly and completely convinced the audience of his range, as he metamorphosed from a wastrel son of a goon to a sinister deadly gang lord in Gangs of Wasseypur. Directors too suddenly took notice of the actor and rushed to him with more substantial and interesting roles. And, in Aamir Khan's Talaash too, his role as Taimur, the seedy blackmailer who works in a brothel, earned him just as much appreciation as Aamir himself, the film’s main protagonist! There’s also Miss Lovely by Ashim Ahluwalia that won top honours at the Mumbai Film Festival in which Nawaz played the protagonist who makes soft porn flicks. And in each role, the actor has displayed such finesse that he is easily among the best of the current lot.
And now it seems that Nawaz has realised his worth. The actor has said that he would be doing only solo roles in his upcoming projects. He plays the main lead in a horror film titled Aatma opposite Bipasha Basu. Besides this, he has three other projects as a lead actor including Ketan Mehta’s Mountain Man, Sanjay Sharma’s Black Currency and theatre director Barry John’s End of Bandit Queen.
Well, Nawaz does deserve to be aiming for lead hero roles, considering the amount of struggle he has put in. Yet, what makes us wonder is that Nawaz has become the fine actor that he is based on the strength of the characters he played – be it in Kahaani or Talaash or even the bit role in Black Friday. So, in choosing to ignore smaller roles for bigger meatier ones, is Nawaz turning his back on the space that allowed him to display his range? And we wonder if there are enough filmmakers like Anurag Kashyap and Ashim Ahluwalia who can manage to keep the great actor busy, and more importantly challenged enough through the year! Sure, the times are changing and edgier films are seeing the light of the day and even doing quite well at the box office, but we just hope that the actor has not made a hasty decision. What say BollywoodLifers? Think Nawaz will prove his mettle as a solo actor too?
