Prithviraj Sukumaran is one of the busiest actors down South, especially in the Malayalam industry where he is considered as one of the best actors in the current lot. This week is quite special for the actor as his horror thriller Ezra has released, and at the same time, his third Bollywood movie, Naam Shabana, has its trailer launched this week. Naam Shabana, as you know, is the prequel to Akshay Kumar's 2014 spy thriller, Baby, and it centres around Taapsee Pannu's character from the original, Shabana Khan. Neeraj Pandey and Akshay Kumar serve as producers here, while Shivam Nair takes on the directorial reins.
Prithviraj, like many other South superstars before him, hasn't had a fair run in Bollywood, despite starring in two big projects. Well, we can't exactly pin the blame on him, as far senior South stars like Mammootty, Mohanlal, Kamal Haasan, Suriya, Vikram, Chiranjeevi, Nagarjuna and to some extent even Rajinikanth have not found massive acceptance in the Northern belts.
Prithviraj made his Bollywood debut with Aiyyaa, that had Rani Mukerji in the lead.
In the movie, he plays a South guy with whose body odour Rani's character gets obsessed with. I am not joking, that's exactly the story of the movie! Aiyyaa was found to be too bizarre for the normal moviegoer, and despite Rani's attempt to be sexy, the movie flopped.
Prithviraj, however, came unscathed from the debacle of the movie, and Rani, impressed with his performance, recommended him for an integral part in the YashRaj production, Aurangzeb. Starring Arjun Kapoor in a double role, Aurangzeb had Prithviraj playing a conflicted cop who also becomes the moral compass of the movie. Even though it was replete with some fine performances, this underrated cop-gangster drama too failed at the box office.
Now Naam Shabana gives Prithviraj his third chance to try his luck in Bollywood. Going by the first trailer that landed today, he is playing Tony, a most wanted man by the Indian Secret Service. So that makes this his first turn as a villain in Bollywood.
Prithviraj has played a villain before in Tamil movies Kana Kandaen and Kaaviya Thalaivan, and he has got critical acclaim for these roles. So he is quite in a comfort zone taking on another negative role. Then there is the fact that everyone loved Baby and therefore Naam Shabana is quite an exciting proposition for them. Above all, the movie has Akshay Kumar in a cameo, and the man is having the best run in his career.
So what do you think? Will Naam Shabana prove third time lucky for Prithviraj's Bollywood career?
