On the wake of Haider's trailer release, we throw some light on the Omkara director's tryst with legendary playwright's work and their fate at box office
Two things are certain. William Shakespeare is a wonderful playwright. And Vishal Bhardwaj is obsessed with Shakespeare. While Haider is trending over the internet, those who witnessed the trailer were left baffled. For those who are not aware, Haider is Bhardwaj's adaptation of Shakespeare's famous play Hamlet.
This is not the first time that Mr Bharadwaj has adapted a Shakespeare's work. Bollywoodlife takes a look on Vishal Bharadwaj's Shakespeare adapted films over the years:
It all started in 2003, when Maqbool was made by VB, which was inspired from playwright's work Macbeth. Maqbool was Macbeth set in Mumbai's underworld backdrop. Tabu, Irrfan Khan starrer won a lot of critical acclaim and the filmmaker was praised for his ability to adapt an old English play in modern desi settings. But the film failed miserably at box office as Maqbool was termed as too intense ,unconventional and lacking star power to woo the audience.
Maqbool's failure did not deter Makdee director to get inspired from Shakespeare's work. In 2006, Bharadwaj came back with another Shakespeare inspired film Omkara with a big star cast of the likes of Ajay Devgn, Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Bipasha Basu and Vivek Oberoi. The film was adaptation of Shakespeare's Othello and did a fairly good business at box office and raked in $16,466,144 worldwide. Omkara was declared a hit by the experts and critics just couldn't stop raving about the film. Omkara was also a turning point in Saif Ali Khan's career as Chotte Nawab had stunned everyone with his incredible performance as antagonist.
Omkara's success seems to have given VB a push to bravely venture into Haider. Hamlet adaptation Haider is gearing for October 2 release. The trailer of the movie suggests a typical intense, yet quirky Bhardwaj style of storytelling with a good mix of stars of the likes of Shahid Kapoor, Tabu, Shraddha Kapoor and Irrfan Khan. Will Bharadwaj succeed in raking money at box office with Haider? Being unconventional, is Haider a huge risk considering typically commercial films minting insane amount of money at the cinemas recently? We will have to wait and watch.
