While the film industry and India, at large, is waking up to the #MeToo movement and calling out sexual predators, Abhijeet Bhattacharya, who has sung numerous Bollywood songs refuses to change his sick mentality. Instead of clarifying his stance on the allegations levelled against him, the singer, who has been accused of sexual misconduct by a woman, fat-shamed and made lewd remarks about the women who have opened about their ordeal. Reacting to the allegations levelled on him, Abhijeet Bhattacharya had told The Indian Express "I don’t know against whom should I take action. Why should I give attention to that person? You are giving it importance not me. Most of the people who are coming out right now are dirty, ugly people. Koi mota hai koi patla hai. No one deserves (the attention). Just to grab some attention they are coming out. Most of the fat and ugly girls are blaming and I wasn’t born at that time."
Well, Mr Bhattacharya, do you even hear yourself? Probably not, because you think body-shaming women and calling them names will shut them up, like it must have in the past. Sorry but we have had enough! Time's up and it is time to face the music. We don't know if the accusations made against you are true or not. We have as much reason to believe the complainant as we have to believe you. You being a celebrity doesn't give your word any more credibility than that of a girl who has had to battle a lot of inner demons to speak up against you. Secondly, how does it matter as to how do the victims look? Do they need your stamp of approval of their beauty before they speak their mind? You may have a melodious voice, sir, but your thoughts are anything but mellifluous!
We thought after your Twitter account was suspended when you posted offensive tweets against women, that you would have cleaned up your act but your outrageous statement gives us enough proof to believe that is not the case. Being a celebrity, like being Superman, is a lot of responsibility. It is not everyone's cup of tea to handle fame. It gets especially difficult when your celebrity status is on the wane. But to try and be in the news with such weird statements is something that is in rather bad taste.
