Ambitious films, with big ideas and announced on a big scale, featuring big stars, which never end up getting up made is nothing new, and likewise, Indian cinema, too, has seen its fair share of such projects. However, some of them were either so ambitious or created so much buzz or their shelving led to so much controversy that they’re spoken about till date. Let’s revisit ten such Indian movies today…

Satyajit Ray’s The Alien
2/11

Satyajit Ray’s The Alien

The rumours of Steven Spielberg’s ET being heavily inspired by Satyajit Ray’s The Alien, which was doing the rounds of major Hollywood studios prior to ET being made, with huge stars like Marlon Brando and Steve McQueen having expressed desire of working in it, refuse to die down to this day.

Aamir Khan-Amitabh Bachchan’s Rishta

Aamir Khan-Amitabh Bachchan’s Rishta

Directed Indra Kumar had announced Rishta, with Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan, way back in 1996, long before the ill-fated Thugs of Hindostan got made. Madhuri Dixit was also supposed to star in it and the mahurat shot was also canned before the media. Unfortunately, the project fizzled out soon after never to be revived again.

Aamir was also to do a sci-fi movie with Shekhar Kapur, the Director’s next such ambitious project after Mr. India, and the two had even spoken about it to the media, but nothing was heard post that.

Paani
5/11

Paani

Another big-scale Shekhar Kapur that was shelved was Paani, which was to star late Sushant Singh Rajput. Word is that it was going way over budget and the script was just not coming together, after which, YRF, the producers backed out.

Chanda Mama Door Ke

Chanda Mama Door Ke

Given Sushant’s keen acumen around astronomy and space research, Chanda Mama Door Ke was another project close to this heart that failed to take off. He had even visited NASA to research for the film.

Munna Bhai Chale Amrika
7/11

Munna Bhai Chale Amrika

The long-awaited third installment of the Munna Bhai franchise now but remains a dream. In fact, Arshad Warsi had earlier exclusively revealed to BollywoodLife that the chances of Director Rajkumar Hirani making another Munna Bhai movie with him and Sanjay Dutt are highly unlikely.

Battle of Saragarhi
8/11

Battle of Saragarhi

Randeep Hooda’s movie on the Battle of Saragarhi was announced even before Akshay Kumar’s Kesari, and he had prepped intensely for the role, but the film got shelved and post Kesari, nothing has been heard about it.

Khabardar
9/11

Khabardar

This is a very unique case as Amitabh Bachchan and Kamal Haasan had all but finished the movie, but the producers felt it wouldn’t work and word is that even the Big B didn’t want to be seen in a negative role at the time, and hence, it never saw the light of day.

Alvin Kalicharan

Alvin Kalicharan

Anil Kapoor and Anurag Kashyap were supposed to work together in Alvin Kalicharan way before AK vs AK, but the former was said to have backed out on the first day of shoot, leading to friction between them, which eventually smoothened out when Director Vikramaditya Motwane brought them together for AK vs AK, which is said to have been inspired by their initial fallout.

Rambo
11/11

Rambo

The official remake of Hollywood legend Sylvester Stallone’s Rambo was launched with much pomp with Tiger Shroff reprising the role, but nothing has materialized on the front and the young star later went on to work with Siddharth Anand in the blockbuster, War, costarring Hrithik Roshan. Rambo hasn’t been shelved yet, but there’s been absolutely no talk of the going ahead.
