Aamir Khan's 1996 film Raja Hindustani was a huge box office hit. It grossed nearly Rs 76 crore worldwide and made Karisma Kapoor a superstar overnight. But did you know that Karisma wasn't the first choice for the film?
Actually, Aishwarya Rai was originally offered this film. Aishwarya herself stated in an interview that she turned down the film to participate in the Miss India contest. Had she not entered Miss India, Raja Hindustani would have been her first film.Aishwarya later made her Bollywood debut in 1997 with the film Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya, which was released a year after Raja Hindustani.
After Aishwarya, the film was offered to actress Juhi Chawla, but she declined. According to reports, Juhi was uncomfortable doing a kissing scene with Aamir Khan, so she left the project. Karisma Kapoor then landed the role, and she delivered a stellar performance. Karisma and Aamir's on-screen chemistry won the hearts of audiences.
Filmmaking is not easy. The actors and the entire team have to work incredibly hard to create a perfect scene. Sometimes there are location issues, sometimes weather or shooting difficulties. A similar incident occurred during the shooting of Raja Hindustani, where a kissing scene required 47 retakes to perfect it. It took three days to complete.
Although the film was a blockbuster, Aamir Khan and Karisma Kapoor faced significant difficulties during the shoot. The two stars were supposed to film a romantic scene, but the cold mountain weather repeatedly halted the shoot. Both actors were shivering, so the scene was completed in three days.
According to reports, the scene had to be reshot approximately 47 times to ensure the director achieved the perfect shot. This became one of the most famous scenes in the film and is still discussed today.
The film's budget was approximately Rs 5.75 crore, but it grossed over Rs 76 crore. Raja Hindustani won five Filmfare Awards, including Best Film, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Music Director, and Best Male Singer. The film's songs, such as Pardesi Pardesi, Aaye Ho Meri Zindagi Mein, and Puchho Zara Puchho, are still popular. The record-breaking sales of these songs made it one of the biggest musical hits of its time.
