Phule Review: Pratik Gandhi-Patralekhaa film will leave a lasting impact on you
Phule is a biographical film about the incredible Indian activists Jyotirao Phule and Savitribai Phule, directed by Anant Mahadevan. Pratik Gandhi, who takes on the role of Jyotirao Phule, absolutely nails it
Savitribai Phule
His potrayal of Jyotirao Phule is flawless and doesn't skip beat so much so that towards the end when Jyotiba (short for Jyotirao) gets struck with a paralytic attack. He even plays that exceptionally which many veteran actors fail to do so. Pratik was just mesmerizing to watch in this film however the same can't be said by his female counterpart
Jyotirao Phule
Savitribai Phule - played by Patralekha Paul - was one of the first 'iron ladies' of India. But her acting and dialogue delivery just can't keep the viewers invested during the first half. In historical accounts where Savitribai has been described as a 'strong' and 'determined' character, Patralekha makes it appear as if Savitribai was a character from some 'damsel in distress' movie
Patralekha Paul
Other supporting actors like Vinay Pathak who plays the role of Govind Rao Phule (Jyotirao Phule's father), Jayesh More who plays the role of Usman Sheikh (Jyotirao Phule's friend) and Darsheel Safary as Yeshwant Rao Phule (Jyotirao Phule's son) are solid pillars in this slowly unfolding biography. Their performances really adds depth and strength to the story as it builds up
Savitribai Phule & Jyotirao Phule
In the first half, both shots and scenes feel a bit forced and bland that they lose the viewers interest. But the second half of the film is a pure cinematic treat for anyone who enjoys those still moments of rural landscape with a lot of intricate detailing
Savitribai Phule & Jyotirao Phule
The film becomes thought provoking and soul shaking due to certain dialogues and scenes which convey the message of caste discrimination and bramhinistical monopoly during the pre Independent society. The dialogues always pack a wake up punch to the audience and proves to be impactful, Muazzam Beg has truly done an incredible job here
Savitribai Phule
The soundtrack of this movie is nothing short of incredible either while lyrically they might seem not so impactful, the music synergizes well with the on screen intensity of scenes. This offers viewers a truly immersive experience
Phule Review
The story of the Phule couple and their struggle has been well portrayed in this 120 mins presentation. A few parts have been cut during the making of this film, however they don't affect the film drastically
