In the 1970s and 1980s, television was quite popular in India, and one show shook the entire population and brought the whole country together.
People would gather to watch the show when it was telecast and would leave their workplaces to watch every scene. As per reports, buses and trains would get delayed as everyone got busy watching the show.
People got excited and thrilled to watch the show as it connected with them. Ramayan was made by Ramanand Sagar and was based on Valmiki Ramayan and Tulsidas’ Ramcharitmanas.
The show was telecast on Doordarshan from January 25, 1987, and a total of 78 episodes were aired. Every Sunday at 9:30 am, people used to wait for the show to start airing.
As per reports, Ramanand Sagar made the show thoughtfully and studied 14 different Ramayans to showcase the story correctly in front of the masses. Ram, Sita, Laxman, Hanuman, and Ravana's characters managed to create a special place in the hearts of the audience.
Arun Govil, Dipika Chikhalia, Dara Singh, and Arvind Trivedi became household names. The show was shot in Umargaon near Mumbai and the episodes were a treat for all. As per reports, agarbattis were used for smoke, and mountains were also made of paper. Rs 9 lakhs were spent on making an episode and Doordarshan earned about 40 lakh rupees from each episode. In 1987-88, this show had an 82% viewership and more than 65 crore people watched it.
During lockdown in 2020, the show was telecast again and 7.7 crore people watched it.
