The Comeback King rose from an unheard-of 56 box office disasters, making a quiet yet massive personal sacrifice along the way, and now commands fees that eclipse those of his biggest industry rivals.
Some actors shout for attention, and then there are quiet, controlled and unforgettable actors. Whether he appears in a comedy, a hard-hitting drama or a gangster saga, he leaves behind a lingering impression. Born on 3 December 1970 in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, he grew up in a Punjabi Sikh household. His schooling years were spent between Lucknow and Punjab, after which he decided to chase his dream of acting and moved to Mumbai.
His first break came in 1996 with Gulzar’s movie. His role was brief, but his presence was strong enough to make people notice. From there, doors began to open, and he stepped into the mainstream with one of India’s biggest banners.
His turning point arrived with Aditya Chopra’s Mohabbatein, where he shared screen space with Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai. The film became a massive hit, and he gained instant nationwide recognition. What followed was a string of memorable films: Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai, Dil Hai Tumhaara, Haasil, Munna Bhai MBBS, Lage Raho Munna Bhai, A Wednesday, and more.
You guessed it right, it is Jimmy Shergill or Jasjit Singh Gill. Not many know that he is also related to the renowned painter Amrita Sher-Gil, a connection that adds another layer to his artistic lineage.
He started acting in Punjabi films in 2005 with Manmohan Singh's Yaaran Naal Baharan, which did well at the box office. He went on to act in several other Punjabi films. He is currently one of the top actors in the industry, and some of the films he has acted in have been hits.
Sheirgill married his long time girlfriend Priyanka Puri in 2001. They have a son named Veer.
In an interview, Sheirgill said that he believes his unconventional film choices have worked in his favour as the audiences now associate him with good roles. He further added that it has also led to a lot of interesting work coming his way. Rediff.com placed him 7th in its Best Actors list of 2011. Sheirgill is a celebrity endorser for brands and products such as Ezeepay and Mahindra Verito. He has also been the brand ambassador of Punjab Premier League.
