Late actor Dilip Kumar had once revealed that THIS actress was told to seduce him by film's director. Here's what happened.
Dilip Kumar and Madhubala fell in love while they were working on Tarana. The two were later cast together in Mughal-E-Azam. In his autobiography, Dilip revealed that director K Asif was quite thrilled with the buzz revolving around the film.
He tried to meddle in their relationship and also advised Madhubala on how to get Dilip to commit. In Dilip Kumar: The Substance and the Shadow, the legendary actor spoke about how rumours about his relationship with Madhubala were gaining a lot of attention in the early 1950s which made Mughal-E-Azam more sensational.
He also noted that the director K Asif, knew about Madhubala’s feelings for him. He began interfering in their relationship. According to Dilip, Asif took it upon himself to push Madhubala towards securing their relationship.
He advised Madhubala the way to win him over was through physical intimacy. Dilip recognized that K Asif’s actions were from a director’s desire to enhance on-screen chemistry between them who also had a real-life emotional connection that was loved by their fans.
He believed that Asif did his work as a filmmaker who prioritized film's impact. Dilip also said that his relationship with Madhubala witnessed several issues and it is when Asif made several attempts to solve their problem.
Dilip Kumar also said that K Asif was initially a bit hesitant to cast him as Prince Salim in Mughal-E-Azam as he felt that the actor looked too young for the tole.
Asif started with the film in 1948 and admired Dilip's screen presence and believed the role required someone with mature looks. Dilip agreed with the director's thoughts. Actor DK Sapru was cast instead but the film was shelved due to financial difficulties.
After Dilip Kumar became a bigger name in the industry, K Asif approached him again for Mughal-E-Azam. Dilip was aware that he would have to rely on his own instincts to shape the character of Prine Salim as he did not expect much guidance from the director. The director was busy with the film's challenges and told Dilip to be himself.
