French actress and animal rights activist Brigitte Bardot passed away at the age of 91 at her home in Southern France. AFP reported her death, but the reason behind her death was not disclosed. It was also reported that she was hospitalised last month.
Bardot was born on September 28, 1934, into a wealthy family in Paris. She got fame in the 1950s as a symbol for sexual liberation. She acted in around 50 films.
She was referred to as BB in France, starred in numerous French cinema hits in the 1950s and 1960s. She was part of the 1956 movie, And God Created Woman, which created controversy at that time for showing long-legged beauty dancing naked on tables.
The actress later abandoned her career to do animal welfare. In a statement released by Brigitte Bardot Foundation said the actress “chose to abandon her prestigious career to dedicate her life and energy to animal welfare and her foundation.”
At the age of 39, she announced her retirement from acting in 1973 after having a glorious career of nearly five decades. At that time, during several occasions, she was fined on several occasions for inciting racial hatred.
The former actress then founded an organisation named Brigitte Bardot Foundation, which was dedicated to wild and domestic animals. Over time, she continued to speak about animals and turned vegetarian.
In later years of her life, Brigitte was called out several times by people for her homophobic remarks. She was fined for inciting racial hatred.
