Along with Malang and Shikara, the film that has hit the theatres this week is Hacked. The film based on cyber crime marks the debut of TV actress Hina Khan in Bollywood. It is directed by Vikram Bhatt. We know that the filmmaker is very fond of the thriller and horror genre and Hacked is in that zone. It is an urban crime drama that tells us that sociopaths can come in the most beguiling manner. Hacked like Mardaani is about an adolescent criminal who fits like a tee into modern society.
What's it about...
Sameera Khanna (Hina Khan), the chief editor of a fashion glossy lives the high life with a swanky job, high rise apartment and fashion forward life. But she is living in an emotional vacuum. A clandestine affair with a married Bollywood superstar, Om Kapoor (Sid Makkar) is not helping matters either. She has a good friend in 19-year-old Vivek a neighbour who is always there for her. A drunken night and a moment of emotional weakness leads Sameera into a one-night stand with Vivek (Rohan Shah). Post that, she comes to know that he is a hacker and she was a victim. Vivek ruins her life. Will Sameera fight back and end this menace?
First things first, Hacked has a very good premise. Cyber crime is something that is relatively unexplored in Bollywood. It also has all the ingredients of a good psychological thriller. The first half of the film is quite good. We are nicely introduced to the characters. The plot also moves at a good pace. Hina Khan fits the persona of a swish fashion editor to the tee. Talking about the music, Tu Jo Mili and Ab Na Phir Se are quite good. While the climax is predictable, it is done in a neat manner.
Hacked had immense potential and could have been kick-ass with some more detailing. The story is good but some of developments are totally devoid of logic. Vikram Bhatt has written the story and screenplay, which is decent but the dialogues are too juvenile. However, the real dampener are the performances. Hina Khan has the screen presence but is too inconsistent. Rohan Shah gets a great role but he is strictly average. Mohit Malhotra and Sid Makkar just do not register.
Hina Khan definitely chose a good script to make her foray into Bollywood but we wish she invested a bit more into her performance. Hacked is one-time watch film if you haven't seen a cyber thriller before.
