'The universe has a way of leading you to where you're supposed to be, at the time you're supposed to be there.' This line from High T (Liam Neeson) in Men In Black: International holds good for Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson who reunite on screen after Thor: Ragnarok. Playing Agent H and Agent M in this science fiction comedy, these two make a fine pair that very well backs the reboot of a beloved franchise. Sure, you will miss the magic that Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones created onscreen together, but MIB: International has its shining moments to offer if you can watch it with an open mind.
What's it about
Having no chill in her life, Molly (Tessa Thompson) dreams of joining the Men In Black to understand the truth of the galaxy. She finds her way to the agency quarters and and gets enlisted as Agent M. At the London quarters of MIB, she meets Agent H ( Chris Hemsworth) and joins him on his mission to protect a VIP alien who posesses the most destructive weapon that is sought by a malicious alien force called The Hive. What's hot
MIB: International is a modern spin to the franchise with more special effects, more aliens, more guns and more locations like New York, London, Paris, Marrakech. You can easily draw parallels between characteristics of Thor-Valkyrie and Agent H-Agent M. Chris Hemsworth's hammer scene which is a callback from Thor (also shown in the trailer) will get the MCU fans excited. Pint-size alien Pawny (voiced by Kumail Nanjiani) is a cute chess-based sidekick to Agent M that will leave you giggling with his goofiness and mean gags. Liam Neeson as High T, Rebecca Ferguson as Riza, Emma Thompson as Agent O and Rafe Spall as Agent C leave a mark with their brief performance.
The plot is predictable. So much that you'll easily guess what happens to the VIP alien and who is the 'mole' in MIB. Though the CGI effects are good, there is not much to talk about the action scenes here. The main characters are poorly developed, so you'd fail to connect with them.
Men In Black: International is a one time watch that you'll remember only as long as next Friday.
