The movie has been waiting for a release date for a while and finally hit screens today. But does Romeo Juliet live upto its name?

What it’s about

Romeo Juliet as the name suggests is a romantic comedy which is directed by Lakshman, who has also penned the story. Hansika plays Aishwarya while Jayam Ravi plays Karthik, a gym instructor. In the first half of the film, Karthik chases Aishwarya to win her heart but when she realises he’s a pauper she ditches him. The pretty Aishwwarya gets engaged to Arvind (Vamsi Krishna) and the rest of the story is about how she tries to find a partner for Karthik. Who does Aishwarya pick for Karthik? What happens to their relationship? Do Aishwarya and Karthik end up together in the end? These questions are answered in the second half of the film.

What’s hot:

Jayam Ravi also essays his role with ease. The comic element works well here because Jayam Ravi has done similar roles like this in the past. Hansika looks her cute bubbly self and has delivered a good performance in this film. There are many emotional scenes that the actress has pulled off well despite the fact that she’s not well-versed with Tamil. A must mention, D Imman’s music for the film – especially Dandanakka. This song is a big plus for this film and comes in the first half to pep up the (bored?) audience.

What’s not

The story of Romeo Juliet is nothing new as we have seen numerous other Tamil films with the same old storyline – boy chases girl; he fails to win her; then girl chases boy; they are happily married. Lakshman doesn’t offer the audience anything new though he has capable actors in the film. The script is not tight and being quite predictable, the film does get boring in places. The first half tests your patience while the second half is better. The movie could also be trimmed in duration (20 minutes at least).

What to do

Romeo Juliet is entertaining in parts and can be watched for Hansika and Jayam Ravi, and Imman’s Dandanakka song.
