Along with Deepika Padukone's Chhapaak, the film that is hitting the screens this Friday is Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior. The big budget historical documents the bravery of Tanhaji Malusare, the brave Subhedaar of Shivaji Maharaj who gave up his life to capture the strategic Kondana Fort. His valour thwarted the Mughal invasion of the Deccan Plateau. Here is our review of the film...

What's it about...
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj has the dream of Swaraj that is cherished by the Marathas. However, the Mughal Sultanate reigned by Aurangzeb is getting more powerful by the day. He has with him many Rajput Kings. The strategic fort of Kondana is with Basheer Khan but now Aurangzeb wants to expand his empire. He decides to send his loyal aide, the marauding Uday Bhan (Saif Ali Khan) to siege the Deccan. This news comes to Shivaji Maharaj and somehow this has to be stopped. It is important to recapture the Kondana Fort for the same. His braveheart general Tanhaji Malusare is busy with his son's wedding and Shivaji Maharaj has no desire to send him to the battle. But Tanhaji takes it upon himself to achieve the impossible. Kondana Fort is located in the ghats and they need an alternate route to break into the fortress.

What is hot...
Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior does full justice to the emotion that Tanaji Malusare invoked in us when we read about him. Ajay Devgn brings forth the loyalty, zeal, courage and passion in his performance. Saif Ali Khan plays to the gallery as the ruthless and somewhat sadistic Uday Bhan Rathore. Kajol illuminates the screen with her presence while Sharad Kelkar is majestic as Shivaji Maharaj. Om Raut and Prakash Kapadia have written some rousing dialogues for the film. Another star of the film is cinematographer Keiko Nakahara. The battle happens at night and it is shown beautifully on screen. Sandeep Shirodkar does a great job with the BGM. The film is over two hours but moves at a relentless pace. Dharmendra Sharma has edited it well. Maay Bhavani and Ghamand Kar songs lift up the song as does the use of Ra Ra Ra Ra in the backdrop. The film is technically first rate with a very massy vibe. A complete winner.

What is not...
The only issue with the film is that people might compare Saif Ali Khan's Uday Bhan with Ranveer Singh's Khilji from Padmaavat. The comparison is inevitable. Those expecting a genuine historical tale will be disappointed as it is a story told for the large screen with many liberties. It is a bit too gory as well. Just a wee bit.

BL Verdict
Ajay Devgn delivers an adrenaline raising experience with Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior. It is film that you will remember for it's scenes and moments. Watch it in a single screen so that you don't feel awkward hooting or clapping. That is if you do!
