Cheating in exams is an age-old subject that has become an intrinsic part of the student-teacher culture. Often reported but rarely discussed, cheating and its repercussions is what Emraan Hashmi's latest release deals with.
What's it about
Rocky (Emraan) plays an agent who helps wealthy students pass exams by making bright but economically backward students write their papers. However, his meeting with one such cheater Sattu doesn't go as planned. Despite the easy money and attractive benefits of helping others pass exams Sattu falls in a trap, he's never able to come out of. Rocky's character is the best-written thing about Why Cheat India and Emraan yet again delivers a knock out performance.
Emraan's versatility doesn't need any introduction. The actor is known to pull off roles that are relatable to the masses. In Why Cheat India as well his Rocky has immense likeability. The film sheds light on the various aspects of cheating and uncovers facts that might have been unknown to the common man. Certain scenes are gripping, especially the one just before the interval sets in. The second half is better than the first and the pace certainly picks up just before the climax. Dialogues are sharp. However one can't take his eyes off Emraan everytime he's on screen. His character draws empathy and hatred at the same time and the actor is able to pull both off with equal ease.
The first half is weak and takes too long for the track to pick pace. There are moments where you feel the story isn't going anywhere. The romantic track between Emraan and Shreya Dhanwanthary lacked spark. Also while Jannat had some element of thrill, another film that dealt with betting, Cheat India lacks the much-needed flavour to the narrative. A lot of scenes feel like they drag on endlessly.
The final monologue of the film has Emraan expose the flaws and loopholes in the existing education system. For students and parents both, Why Cheat India is a must watch to experience the lesser known facts about the prevalent system. Also, Emraan fans will be in for a real treat!
