With two big films releasing in a span of a month, comparisons between the two is inevitable. While one film's fate is at stake at box office, there have been questions raised on the success of the other. We give you reasons why Vikram's I is expected to make more money than Rajinikanth's Lingaa at box office.
2014 has not been a great year for Rajinikanth. His film Kochadaiiyaan tanked so badly that one of his property had been seized by the bank as the producers failed to repay the loan. When he did a quickie with ace director KS Ravikumar, everyone expected Rajini magic to work wonders at box office. But despite an overwhelming response in the opening weekend, the film's success at the box office is under scanner, thanks to distributors claiming losses.
On the other hand Vikram's I has finally hit the screens and is making all the right noises at the box office, despite mixed reviews. With the film's fate yet to be decided at box office, we tell you why Vikram's I will manage to become a bigger hit than Rajinikanth's Lingaa.
Wide spread promotions of I
While buzz around Lingaa slowly built up after it's music and trailer launch, there has been hype around Shankar's I ever since the unveiling of it's fantastic teaser, which left people in awe. Lingaa was promoted solely on the shoulders of superstar Rajinikanth, whereas the makers of I went all out to promote the film, leaving no stone unturned. Vikram even featured in popular reality show Bigg Boss 8 that was hosted by Salman Khan, which gave I a lot of attention in Bollywood too.
I released simultaneously in Hindi,Tamil and Telugu
I is expected to benefit from the simultaneous release of dubbed versions in Hindi and Telugu, along with the Tamil original. With the widespread promotions in B-town, Hindi version of I is expected to make good money at box office. KS Ravikumar's Lingaa was released in Hindi after two weeks of Tamil release. With absolutely no buzz around the Hindi version of Lingaa, thanks to zero promotions in Bollywood, Rajinikanth's flick might have missed a trick or two which could have benefited the film's fate at box office.
Lingaa Vs PK/ I vs Alone
Call it bad timing of Lingaa's release or bad luck, but Rajinikanth's Lingaa faced stiff competition from Aamir Khan's blockbuster PK, which released a week after Lingaa saw the light. PK gave Lingaa a run for it's money, not only in North India but even in Tamil Nadu. Vikram's I has been lucky in that matter as no big film was there to challenge it at box office. Ajith's Yennai Arindhaal's delay in release worked in I's favour. Even in B-town, Vikram's I has to clash only with Alone, which is not as big of a film as Aamir's PK.
What are the true box office figures of Lingaa?
By the end of opening weekend, there was buzz that Rajinikanth's Lingaa had crossed the Rs 100 crore mark. After the widespread distributors strike, demanding for compensation for loss incurred due to Lingaa, many believed that Rajini- Sonakshi starrer's box office figures have been botched up. Even today, it is unclear how much Lingaa has earned at the box office. If the distributors version is to be believed as true, then Lingaa can't be even called as box office hit, which makes it safe to say that Shankar's I might make more money than Rajini's Lingaa.
Rajinikanth's usual aura missing
Many hardcore fans of Rajini felt that Lingaa was disappointing as the famous styles and mannerisms of Rajini were missing in the film. While the ageing superstar is still extremely popular, many believe that Thalaivar might be losing his Midas touch. On the other hand, Vikram's performance in I is top notch and has been applauded by one and all. As Rajini's magic weakens and Vikram's admiration among the masses grows leaps and bounds, we think Vikram might just pull off a bigger hit than Lingaa, despite I's shortcomings.
