Music is food for the soul and every year there are beautiful melodies churned out by Tamil music directors that touched people’s hearts. 2014 had some exceptional music from the studios of A R Rahman, Anirudh, Harris Jayaraj, Imaan, G V Prakash, Yuvan and Santhosh Narayan. From melodies to hip hop and more, these songs topped the music charts on the radio as well. Here’s a look at the most popular numbers this year.
Po Indra Neeyaga (VIP) – Sung by Dhanush and with lyrics by him as well, this song from Velailla Pattathaari (VIP) topped the charts early on in the year itself. Music director Anirudh and Dhanush are not on ly related but share a great relationship and this is evident from the songs they churn out together. A touching melody, this was one of the biggest musical hits in 2014 for Tamil cinema.
Mona Gasolina (Lingaa) – A R Rahman is back to scoring music for Supertsar Rajinikanth for this K S Ravikumar film. Mona Gasolina was the only song from Lingaa’s album that became a hit with the audience. Penned by Madhan Karky and sung by Mano for the Superstar, it’s been ruling the air waves for the past few weeks.
Bang Bang (Anjaan) – Anjaan had by Yuvan Shanakar Raja and the most popular number from this film was Bang Bang. Madhan Karky penned the lyrics for this number which was the intro song for Suriya. Singer Ranjith did complete justice to this track and the audience is still going Bang Bang Bang!
Mersalaayitten (I) – The movie I has bot been released but music album by A R Rahman has topped the charts on iTunes and elsewhere. Rahman roped in Anirudh to sing Mersalaayitten and the young music director has done a wonderful job. Kabilan Vairamuthu has written the lyrics for this foot-tapping number which struck a chord especially with the youth. A peppy club number indeed!
Selfie Pulla (Kaththi) – A R Murugadoss roped in Anirudh as the music director for Kaththi and the audience lapped up the music. Let’s Take A Selfie Pulla was one of the big hits this year from this album. Sung by Vijay and with lyrics by Madhan Karky, the song focused on the current trend of selfies around the world. Young, hot and happening, the song was a hit on the radio as well.
Naan Nee (Madras) – A beautiful melody from P Ranjith’s Madras was Naan Nee. Music director Santhosh Narayan showed how versatile he is with this smashing number for Karthi. The song was sung by Shakthisree Gopalan and Dheekshitha with lyrics by Umadevi. The soothing number is a classic number that people never got tired of listening to.
Ennthaara Ennthaara (Thirumanam Ennum Nikaah) – This beautiful number came from the studio of Gibran. Newbie director Aneesh struck gold with his film and this album by roping in Gibran. With lyrics by Karthik Netha, the song was brought to life by Shadab Faridi and Chinmayi. Ennthaara Ennthaara also was hit with the audience and music stations kept receiving requests for the song to be played
