The producer blamed political conspirators against Kochadaiiyaan actor to spread false rumours about Lingaa's failure at box office
Within three days of it's release. reports came out that Rajinikanth's Lingaa broke all records to become the first South Indian film to cross Rs 100 crore at box office. While fans rejoiced, there were a few who raised questions on the credibility of the figures. Ever since then there has been a question mark on Lingaa's box office success, with some distributors demanding refund to cover the losses incurred due to the film.
At last, the producer of Rajini-Sonakshi starrer has broken his silence on this issue and made a scathing attack on forces which are trying to tarnish Rajinikanth's inage. Talking to a leading daily, Rockline Venkatesh said,"Lingaa was made out of a really good script. While Eros International was in the process of selling the distribution rights, a few leading politicians or their benamis approached us for rights for the entire Tamil Nadu. But Eros picked Vendhar going by its track record. Vendhar offered to buy the movie at the price quoted only if we released the movie on Rajni Sir's birthday. Then where was the problem? After a movie is released, reviews come out, and the momentum picks up. But this distributor (Trichy and Thanjavur) Singaravelan started campaign against the movie from the third day itself. He later put it out on YouTube, and roped in a couple of others too, and said Rajnikanth should intervene and get refunds. We can understand if an outsider expresses a critical opinion about the film, but Singaravelan, as a distributor, is part of the family. His actions hurt the movie."
The producer went on to claim that these protest by some distributors is an attempt to cause damage to Rajini's political aspirations. "I think it is politically motivated to tarnish the superstar's name, weaken his image, and scare him away from politics. It is a part of this conspiracy to deny Rajni Sir his political space. TN elections are due next year, and Rajni Sir cannot afford to miss the opportunity this time because he is only 64 now", added the producer.
Does this mean Rajinikanth is contemplating to enter politics anytime soon? Only time will tell. Meanwhile, the mystery behind Lingaa's correct box office figures is still to unravel.
