National Award winning director SP Jananathan has passed away due to a cardiac arrest. It was reported that he was found unconscious at his home and rushed to the Apollo Hospital. In his career, he has made films like Peranmai and Ivarkai that got immense critical acclaim. It seems he was busy editing his movie on Thursday and went home for lunch. When he did not return for a long time, his assistants rushed to his place and found him unconscious. They put him on a ventilator and declared him brain dead. His condition did not improve in the subsequent days. He was busy on the film, Laabam with Vijay Sethupathi and Shruti Haasan in the lead. It was delayed due to COVID and expected to release this year. In the year 2004, he got the National Award for the Best Feature Film in Tamil for Ivarkai. Condolences are pouring in from the industry for the talented filmmaker...
Born in Vadaseri, Thanjavur, Jananathan had assisted top Tamil directors such as B. Lenin, Bharathan, Vincent Selva and Keyar before he made his debut with Ivarkai. The film was a dud at the box office but went on to win the National Award. He then worked with Jiiva and Nayanthara in a film.
The filmmaker was from a marginalised background. He once told The News Minute, "I’m from a very impoverished household and belong to a backward community. I have eight siblings and I am the only one who got a degree. It was very difficult for me to study because I had no help at home and not enough money to get tutored. I felt the pain of being a first-generation learner and I thought if it was this hard for me, imagine the situation of someone from an SC or ST community."
