He will also be contributing 10% of his remuneration for all the gigs he will perform for the next 6 months!
Popular Malayalam musician Stephen Devassy, who is also a well known associate of Oscar winner AR Rahman and has performed with the maestro during many of his concerts, has decided to do his bit for the Chennai floods victims. This comes in wake of many popular South and Bollywood actors like Shah Rukh Khan, Kamal Haasan, Rajinikanth, Siddharth, Dhanush etc. stepping forward to help the victims.
Stephen will be giving 10% percent of his remuneration from all gigs for next six months, starting first with the New Year eve performance in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. Also, at each of the shows, a fifteen minute set titled "In the name of love" will be slotted. This slot is a tribute to Chennai's unbroken spirit during the floods.
This is what he has to say about his endeavour, "Whenever a disaster occurs, help comes in during that particular time. We forget rehabilitation is a slow and long process, especially for the lesser privileged. In the suburban areas like Semmencherry, people have lost everything including vital documents like ration card. For them to get back to their normal routine is a big struggle. This is the reason why I wanted to do my bit for the disaster relief in a step by step manner."
Stephen will be performing at the following cities next year - Chennai (January 26), Dubai (February 12), and Bangalore (February 19). The rest of the shows are yet to be finalised.
Stephen Devassy's association with AR Rahman goes way back in 2007, when they collaborated for Vijay's Tamil film Azhagiya Tamil Magan (2007). Stephen was also a part of Rahman's Jai Ho tour post his Oscar victory, and the Sydney Festival in 2009 where he performed in front of a crowd of over a lakh. He has done over 50 shows with AR Rahman all over the world.
