2019 was the year when we saw a dip in the viewership of TV. This was the year when we saw an increase in the digital viewership. While most of the audience switched to digital platforms, the others remained loyal to their favorite daily soaps. Just like last year, supernatural as a genre remained the fad of the year. Meanwhile kitchen dramas like Bhagya series (Kundali Bhagya and Kumkum Bhagya), Rishta series (Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai and Yeh Rishtey Hai Pyaar Ke) remained favorite dinner time conversations. All in all, 2019 was the year that didn't change the diaspora of the TV industry, while it's sisters (the big screen and the digital space) witnessed a revolution. So, let's take a look at the TV shows that fared well and that did not in 2019
Bigg Boss 13
One of the most popular reality show Bigg Boss, after it's dismissal 12th season came back to it's original form with season 13. The season started on 29 September and was an all celebrity season. Rashami Desai, Sidharth Shukla, Koena Mitra were the few popular names who participated in the show. The drama quotient in the show was so high that the season is said to be the most successful one from the series. Owing to it's popularity the makers also extended the season for five weeks.
Yeh Jaadu Hai Jinn Ka
Could easily be called as the underdog of the year, Yeh Jaadu Hai Jinn Ka turned out to become a hit shortly after its premiere. With relatively not so popular names featuring in it, the Gul Khan produced show became a hit amongst the masses. The show has already topped the rating charts in it's brief period of airing.
Another underdog of the year is Chhoti Sardarni. The Colors show was launched without any fanfare. The buzz around the show and it's cast was the least. However call it viewers choice the show become the top show on the channel. The Pradeep Kumar produced show has also topped the charts of late.
Khatron Ke Khiladi 9
After a hit 8th season, Rohit Shetty was brought back to host Khatron Ke Khiladi 9. With a starry cast of participants including Bharti Singh the season did so well that the channel also brought a spin off to the show called Khatra Khatra Khatra
While some of the above mentioned shows did exceedingly well, here's a list of TV shows that did not rock the charts but kept the audience glued to the TV screens. Yeh Rishtey Hai Pyaar Ke, Divya Drishti, Kahaan Hum Kahaan Tum
The reboot of Sanjivani A Medical Boom starred Surbhi Chandna and was expected to rock the rating charts. However the show never clicked with the masses despite having popular faces, perfect time slot and a big launch. The show never saw any hike in its rating and was one of the biggest disasters of the year.
Ek Bhram Sarvagunn Sampann
Another big disaster was Star Plus' Ek Bhram Sarvagunn Sampann. The show has youth's popular faces Zain Imam and Shrenu Parikh. It was touted to change the way INDIAN TV is viewed. However, call it fate or what, but the show never saw any decent ratings on the charts. Infact, it bombed badly.
Nach Baliye 9
A big ticket reality show with Salman Khan's name involved to it. Nach Baliye 9 was expected to break the TRP records, with a twisted concept of exes dancing together. But alas makers' formula of involving exes' drama on the dance floor didn't excite the audience. After a week, the show fizzled out of the charts and remained out of it till it's run.
Dance India Dance: Dance Ka Jungistaan
Zee TV's flagship show, Dance India Dance: Dance Ka Jungistaan, got Kareena Kapoor Khan to make her TV debut. However, Kareena's glamour didn't work for the show which was only known for its talent quotient and not star gaze. With poor ratings of just 1 point, Kareena Kapoor's debut TV show fell badly.
This year saw several TV shows fall badly on face. However, the other mentionable shows that failed to grab the eyeballs were Bepannah Pyaar, Ted Talks hosted by Shah Rukh Khan, Jhansi Ki Raani.
