Zee TV's weekend drama Aghori premiered tonight. The show has a starry cast featuring Gaurav Chopra, who is returning to the fiction space on TV after a really long time, Sargun Kaur who seems to have loved the genre of horror cum thriller (her last two shows Kaal Bhairav Rahasya and Tantra hailed from the same genre) and Parag Tyagi. We saw the first episode of the biweekly series and if you are still confused about whether you should invest your time in it or not, we are here to your aid. Here's what we thought of the show...
What's it about
The series is primarily based around Aghori (a group of ascetic Shaiva sadhus). The series starts with one of the gurus' giving life to a stillborn girl. This makes the girl special, and Lord Shiva's special child. Therefore, the gurus' principal Rudranath (Parag Tyagi) is behind the life of the girl who is named Kamakshi, as she is the key to him being an immortal. Only by sacrificing her life, he will become immortal. He kills the other Aghori and Kamakshi's, parents. 23 years later, Kamakshi (Sargun Kaur) is living with her maternal uncle and we get to know that she is not able to get married due to unfortunate circumstances. Rudranath sends his loyal disciple Adhvik to find Kamakshi. He enters her life by ruining one of her marriages, and that's how the story proceeds.
The concept is really interesting, indeed. We have never been introduced to Aghori, hitherto. The design of the show, giving an urban touch to Indian storytelling. The first episode was itself filled with a lot of drama. The supernatural element (unlike Daayan and Naagin) is something interesting and might excite the audience.
Well, it is an Indian daily soap, so we have to give them the liberty of having less logic. All the three actors seem quite well in the look, however, performance wise they might get a grip of it may be in the further episodes.
The second episode seems quite action induced. So if you are a fan of the supernatural genre and well, the episode has some scenes a la Doctor Strange, then this show won't disappoint you.
