The most shocking development over the weekend was the arrest of Naagin 3 actor, Pearl V Puri. He has been arrested for the alleged rape on a minor on the sets of his daily show. Pearl V Puri who has done shows like Badtameez Dil, Nagarjuna, Naagin 3 in the past reportedly assaulted the girl after promising her work. Just as the news broke out, Pearl V Puri found huge support from his friends in the TV industry. Krystle D’Souza, Hina Khan, Nia Sharma, Shaheer Sheikh, Anita Hassanandani, Karishma Tanna, Ekta Kapoor and many others came out in support. This left many netizens angry. On Sunday, we saw a trend Justice Over Celeb Privilege. They wondered how people could be indifferent to the suffering of a minor. The fact that the name of the girl’s mother was out in the public domain was even more infuriating.
They were fuming that how could top celebs openly support their friend. Firstly, this is a sensitive case with a top actor and a child being at the centre of it. Secondly, Ekta Kapoor’s post on how Pearl became the scapegoat in a custody fight added a new dimension to it. The actor is booked under POCSO, the workings of which is slightly different from normal cases.
What is a little surprising is why people would see red if some celebs support their friend? Isn’t it natural human tendency to be protective of those whom you love and care for? At the end of the day, celebs are also humans. While it is wrong to reveal identities of the alleged victim, there is nothing objectionable in vouching for the character of a co-star or friend. Just imagine such a situation in your life. How would you feel if no one came in support and just kept tabs on the matter from a distance? What is so ‘privileged’ about this? We are sure that everyone wants justice for the aggrieved parties, and we wonder what netizens would say if he got acquitted in the matter.
Do you feel social media is right in trolling some celebs just because they stood up for a friend? And if people are siding by someone knowing the kind of backlash that’s in store, they might be having strong reasons.
