Eight seasons and 73 episodes later, Game of Thrones has finally come to an epic end and fans are still reeling from the shock it brought. The exhaustive narrative concluded with Bran Stark being crowned as the King of the Iron Throne, Jon Snow killing Daenerys Targaryen and returning to Night's Watch, while Sansa decided to rule Winterfell. And while fans are expressing disappointment over the concluding episode of GoT, for the cast, it was a tough day at work.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Emilia Clarke, who played Daenerys Targaryen in the cult show, spoke at length about her journey from being the Mother of Dragons to playing the Mad Queen. When Emilia was first handed out the script of the Game of Thrones final season, she revealed that she read it seven times! Emilia told EW, "Because it comes out of f—king nowhere. I’m flabbergasted. Absolutely never saw that coming. I cried and I went for a walk. I walked out of the house and took my keys and phone and walked back with blisters on my feet. I didn’t come back for five hours. I’m like, ‘How am I going to do this?'"
For the final season table read, Emilia sat across from Kit Harington, who plays Jon Snow. She wanted to "watch him compute all of this" and when they got to their final scene together, Harington revealed his reaction in the interview and said, "I looked at Emilia and there was a moment of me realising, 'No, no…'", while Emilia sadly mouthed, "Yes". Revealing Kit’s reaction, Clarke added, "He was crying."
Preparing to shoot the final scene, Emilia revealed her thoughts about Daenerys’ fate and said, "An actor should never be afraid to look ugly. We have uglier sides to ourselves. And after 10 years of working on this show, it’s logical. Where else can she go? I tried to think what the ending will be. It’s not like she’s suddenly going to go, ‘Okay, I’m gonna put a kettle on and put cookies in the oven and we’ll just sit down and have a lovely time and pop a few kids out.’ That was never going to happen. She’s a Targaryen. I thought she was going to die. I feel very taken care of as a character in that sense. It’s a very beautiful and touching ending. Hopefully, what you’ll see in that last moment as she’s dying is: There’s the vulnerability — there’s the little girl you met in season 1. See? She’s right there. And now, she’s not there anymore. But having said all of the things I’ve just said. I stand by Daenerys. I stand by her! I can’t not."
