Zee TV's flagship singing reality show, Sa Re Ga Ma Pa L'il Champs came to its conclusion just a few minutes ago. The seventh season of the series saw 14 year old Sugandha Date walking away with the trophy. Sugandha was referred to as Shreya Ghosal by guest Madhuri Dixit and she has won the season after beating five strong contenders. During her journey in the competition, Sugandha's rendition of Bhare Naina, Hum Tum, Chupke Se were highly applauded. Amidst much fanfare and glitz, Sugandha was announced as the seventh L'il Champ of the franchise and moments after her victory, BollywoodLife got in touch with the little winner, who has also participated in Indian Idol Junior.
Sugandha claims winning the singing reality show has been "the best journey" of her life. "A lot of hard work has gone into it, to see this happen," says the girl who has been singing since she was six years old. Sugandha had participated in another singing reality show, Indian Idol Junior, five years ago and was in the top five. "I just wanted to do better than the top five," quipped the beaming winner. We asked her if she saw any difference in herself in the past five years and Sugandha confessed that she has grown a lot, thanks to her guru Anand Sharma. She said, "He has trained me so hard. I have won this trophy to make him proud." Talking about the winning moment, Sugandha claims that it was something that is unexplainable. "I cried," she exclaimed. The enthusiasm of winning is not limited to Sugandha, as she revealed that the excitement of her school friends is "on another level”.
With this victory, Sugandha has become a popular name not just amidst her school friends but across the nation as well. However, the little girl is quite nonchalant when it comes to popularity. The fame hasn't gone to her head. "I don't deal with it (popularity) as such. I don't get affected by popularity or fame. I just like when people compliment me. But I don't let it affect me. I just strive to work harder," said Sugandha.
And now her aim is to do excel in her work. Sugandha said, “I just want to do good work in life. It's okay if I'm not popular. And above all of that, I want to become a good human being."
Not many are aware that the 14-year-old, who has been a finalist of one singing reality show, is now a winner of another one, has achieved more than that. Sugandha has sung for Priyanka Chopra starrer Jai Gangaajal, IPL’s 2016 anthem and several daily soaps. Despite doing all of that, Sugandha wanted to participate in the Zee TV show to gain knowledge. "I wanted to learn," said the enthusiastic singer.
Sugandha's Bollywood playback song Maai was featured in Priyanka Chopra’s Jai Gangaajal and the girl considers it as a “big achievement” to sing for Priyanka Chopra. Furthermore, after singing for the global icon, Sugandha is keen to playback for several other Bollywood actors. “I want to sing for Deepika Padukone and Alia Bhatt," she concluded.
Sugandha, who has stepped in her 10th grade now, is planning to focus on studies post the victory.
