The negative characters played by our leading ladies on the small screen have always been very enticing. Be it Komolika from Kasautii Zindagii Kay or Ramola Sikand from Kahin Kisi Roz, these ladies have given us ample reasons why we love to hate them! Vamps bring in those interesting twists in TV shows, they add masala in the life of the protagonists and make their lives a living hell, in return earning a whole lot of loath from the audience. The stylish grey shade roles are important and have often got more attention than the simple and docile bahu (protagonist).
Let’s accept it, without the vamps, our TV shows would get a tad bit boring. Giving an ode to those leading ladies who take on a negative shade on the small screen, we are going to pit one very popular antagonist against a newly emerging vamp. We are talking about Maya Mehrotra from Beyhadh, played by Jennifer Winget and Janhvi Mittal from Ek Bhram-Sarvagun Sampanna, played by Shrenu Parikh. While they champion the negative lead, both the actresses have previously won accolades for their positive portrayals too.
Maya Mehrotra – Jennifer Winget
Jennifer Winget was the soul of Beyhadh and ruled the show with her presence. Jennifer set a benchmark by playing the role of a businesswoman who is very possessive and is obsessed with her lover Arjun (Kushal Tandon) and would go to any lengths to marry him. Beyhadh aired in 2016 and Jennifer’s acting chops won many hearts. She would swiftly switch from being the cruel and deranged Maya to a fragile and scared Maya in seconds. Her natural talent kept the viewers hooked to the show. One good thing despite her antagonist character was her stylish look - simple yet classy. She wore whites more often and kept her look to a bare minimum. It was a refreshing change from the huge bindis and heavy make-up vamps of the past. News is Beyhadh is coming back with season 2 and Jennifer is likely to be cast again.
Janhvi Mittal – Shrenu Parikh
The newbie vamp, Shrenu is doing a commendable job as Janhvi. She plays the role of an ideal daughter-in-law, who has an ulterior motive of killing all the members of the Mittal family. The promos of Ek Bhram-Sarvagun Sampanna grabbed eyeballs. Usually, the bahu is meant to be the shy yet fierce lady who would go to any extent to protect her family. However, Janhvi Mittal is just the same, but only for those who don’t know about her evil side. She is a wolf in sheep’s clothing. So, what brings the change? The secret as to why she is so vengeful would be revealed slowly as the show progresses. It’s been just a week since the show aired but Shrenu’s portrayal of the character is already winning hearts. Shrenu’s look too was much appreciated by the audience. We are back with traditional jewellery and heavy make-up, but that’s what defines Janhvi’s character.
Ramola Sikand (Sudha Chandran) from Kahin Kissii Roz, Komolika Basu (Urvashi Dholakia) Kasautii Zindagi Kay, Jigyasa Walia (Ashwini Kalsekar) from Kasam Se, Mandira (Mandira Bedi) and Payal (Jaya Bhattacharya) from Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, Dr Simran (Rupali Ganguly) from Sanjeevani, Tapasya (Rashmi Desai) from Uttaran, Kalyani Devi or Dadisa (Surekha Sikri) from Balika Vadhu, Ammaji (Meghna Malik) from Na Aane Iss Des Laado, are some of the most hated yet most love vamps of the small screen. And looks like Janhvi Mittal and Maya have joined the league of these super villains of the small screen.
So, which character do you like the most? Maya Mehrotra or Janhvi Mittal? Vote now
