In a shocking turn of incidents on Monday, actor Karan Oberoi was arrested by the Oshiwara Police on charges of rape and extortion. We know him as one of the members of the Band Of Boys and Raghav from Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin. He has denied all the charges saying he was being constantly harassed by the woman since a couple of years. His good friend Pooja Bedi has now come to his rescue saying that men need to be protected from women misusing the law. She was present at a press meet organised by his friends in Mumbai. She told IANS, "Taking the history of our country in consideration and the patriarchal society that we are living in, there is a situation where a rape victim goes to the police station and her complaint does not get registered, which is wrong. So we need laws against rape and such violence; but at the same time, if a severe number of women are misusing the law if they are not respecting the law that are meant to protect them rather taking advantage of it, we need to think about how to protect the right of a man as well!"
Karan has been remanded to police custody till May 9. The lady slapped charges against him under the Indian Penal Code Sections 376 (rape) and 384 (extortion). Pooja further told IANS, "It is unfortunate to see such a kind man being subjected to something like this, the reputation damage, the family trauma is unacceptable to me. There are a number of cases where women are not using the law, they are misusing the law." The lady said that he got intimate with her on the pretext of marriage, filmed the act and later blackmailed her with it to extort money. In fact, Pooja Bedi also read out the messages sent by the victim. One of them reads like, "Karan, I am being open and upfront. Can we have sex, without thinking about future, emotions and anything else just for now, as my body needs it. And I do not feel comfortable to indulge with anyone else, so let me know what do you think about it."
She also highlighted how the messages proved that the relationship was one-sided and she made advances with such messages. Karan Oberoi's lawyer, Dinesh Tiwari said, "Though it will be little tougher for first few days but considering the fact that we have all the evidence to prove that my client is innocent, we should get him bailed." He pinpointed how the woman despite claiming that she was sexually assaulted was ready to get married to Karan. "How could you get ready to marry someone whom later you call a rapist?," he said.
