“There's a lot of confusion, there's a lot of insecurity, and the other thing is that a song used to earlier take a story forward. Before, there used to be situational songs — so, in that song itself, we used to see friendship, romance and even marriages. But, now what has happened is that songs are placed more as a marketing tool rather thank taking the story ahead. So, they feel, let's do an item song that could be popular, let's do a recreation song that people may like, so it's become more of a marketing thing than taking the story ahead,” In an exclusive interview with BollywoodLife, legendary Singer Shaan delved deep into his many hit songs, how Tanha Dil finally brought him into the mainstream, non-film music scene shifting from albums to singles, and why even music from hit movies with good songs don't registers with the audience today.

“I still believe in the 1-composer angle of making music (we ad also asked about the new trend of multiple composers in a single Hindi film along with how the standard of music in Bollywood has drastically fallen) because that composer gets the complete narration, the entire storyboard, the premise, based on which the film's music can be made, and because the song is so well entwined with the film, people like it and it becomes a hit. But if you keep taking songs from a bank, it isn't remembered because it isn't linked to the story,” added Shaan

“So, you don't connect with the song and also, a lot of filmmakers today don't believe in songs in their films. They want to make more realistic films, more solid films. The songs run in the background, that, too, for just 30 or 40 seconds, so nothing registers. The song can be good, but the point is there's no justification. There are only a few filmmakers like Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Karan Johar who love that lavish setup and a big song and they create that situation for a song, that's why their songs become hits and people love it, so there are many factors who come into play,” concluded the legendary singer. Now doesn't that makes sense, especially coming from Shaan. Watch the video above...
