Today, 21st May, marks the day all horror fans were waiting for with bated breath. And if you're a zombie aficionado, then the excitement is bound to be double. Maverick Hollywood Director Zack Snyder, who revived the zombie genre with 2004's blockbuster horror classic, Dawn of the Dead, brings his next zombie movie, Army of the Dead, to Netflix, and going by the promos, the Bautista starrer is looking like a total blast. Plus, if you're a Bollywood buff, then there's added incentive to watch it with Huma Qureshi making her Hollywood debut in an extended cameo.
Now all that is well and good, but with Army of the Dead releasing, it got us reminiscing about India's own iconic zombie film or rather, zombie comedy, or zom-com if you may, Go Goa Gone. Though not a box-office smash (a reflection of it being ahead of its time), the Saif Ali Khan, Kunal Kemmu, Vir Das, Puja Gupta and Anand Tiwari starrer has gained a cult following since its release, and even with other zombie fare from the South like Miruthan and Zombie Reddy doing pretty well, Go Goa Gone still remains the benchmark for zombies or horror-comedies in general for Indian cinema (yes, may consider to be even better than Stree).
Now, given the cliffhanger at which Go Goa Gone ended and the fact that horror movies have always been most ripe for sequels since the early 30s, the one question since 2013 – the year the film had released, is when is its sequel arriving. While the development of the same has seen varying degrees of fluctuating fortunes, BollywoodLife had got the perfect opportunity to get the latest dope on Go Goa Gone 2 during two of our previous exclusive interviews with Kunal Kemmu and its director duo, Raj & DK.
Opening about what's happening on the front of Go Goa Gone 2, Kunal Kemmu had said, “Go Goa Gone...man...I mean, blessed are those to be in this position like I am to have a film that is still being talked about with so much love and anticipation eight years after it released, and that, too, after being a film, which no one believed in. So, I don't know, man, honestly. Officially, there's no word on it. I've always had conversation with everybody involved and the intent is there, but I don't know...logistical, administrative...whatever those issues are, they need to align. So, officially, I don't know. It's not in my hands, if it was completely in my hands, we would have started making the film the day we finished the first film.”
On the other hand, Raj & DK had stated, “We never thought we'd make sequels. We've also wanted to go from one original idea to another because there's enough to tell. So, it is a quandary we're in because for us, moving onto the next new project is what we try to do. Even right now, our next couple of projects are again new ones. The only time where we're actually making a sequel is The Family Man, where there's a season two. Besides that, the eyes are on the next project and the next after that, which are both brand-new ideas. So, I think we're looking forward to creating another world, and then, we run out of ideas, we'll come back and make sequels.”
Well the picture certainly doesn't look rosy at the moment for Go Goa Gone 2, but as the old adage goes: “Never say never.” Till then, let's all keep our fingers crossed.
